Sri Lanka is now currently facing an extreme crisis. People are frustrated due to the pro-government activities and the cause of the economic crisis. People are exhausted standing in queues for the very basic needs like gas, fuel, food, extended number of power cuts and price increases for every basic need. People are facing an extremely stressed life for food. And now every citizen of Srilanka has risen up against the wrong that has been done to this beautiful mother Lanka, with a sense of unity, no racism and camaraderie that is breathtaking to behold. People have begun their protests that were seen all around the country and have culminated at a single, main location, a space adjacent to the President’s Secretariat at Galle Face, located in one of Colombo’s busiest business hubs. And this zone, the zone of every single protester united on behalf of their motherland is named ‘Gotagogama’. ‘Gotagogama is created to unfurl the economic crisis and miserable struggling life of every Srilankan caused but this katiscrocacy government.
Gotagogama is a protest site that is completely peaceful. People show their against by holding up boards stating crafty slogans, stating justice and raising their voices in creative chants. After the 2019 Easter attack, obviously, the Easter attack was a complete mysterious incident by the government. And then this was the point where all the religions and communities get united with no racism. The Youngsters pitched tents for medical needs, a place to educate and explore ourselves, a library, an art gallery and many more. This is clear proof of how the new generation carries on a peaceful protest against the Rajapaksha family who is dominating the country and the government as the principal reason for the crisis our Srilankans facing through.
Attack on Gotagogama
For a month Srilankan citizens were taking place on a peaceful protest all over the country against the Srilankan kakistocracy government for the cause of the political and severe financial-economic crisis. Srilankan people urged the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha, Mahinda Rajapaksha and the entire Rajapaksha family to step down from the politics for the financial and economic crisis made up. The 30days peaceful protest was a protest that caused no harmful destruction to the citizens or violence all over the country.
And the day 9th of May 2022 is an engraved day in the whole of Srilankan political history. That metamorphosed the whole peaceful protest that took place for a month into a major site of violence, blood, sweat and destruction in a short stretch period. This vicious setting was ascribed by a group of people supporting the Rajapakshas of SLPP demanding for Ex-Prime minister Mahindha Rajapaksha not step down.
First, this group of Rajapaksha supporters breezed in at MainaGoGama in front of the Temple trees and commenced to remove all the tents there burned, destroyed almost viewed a tense situation. Next, the same act proceeded at Galle Face Green Gotagogama they removed all the tents and burned them. Those tents were full of creative art galleries, a library full of books, and several valuable things built by the youngsters. In the meantime, Television channels live streamed graphic footage of the destruction and attacks on the protesters. The Rajapaksha acolytes demolished the entire creative stuff in just a blink of an eye and also it is visualized the acolytes acted extremely aggressively and brutally attacked with metal poles towards the peaceful protesters. Almost the environment was explored with violence and destruction. Police and forces showed up less earlier and police began to scatter the attackers with tear gases to unfurl the crowd either knowingly or unknowingly they couldn’t control the violence. In the meantime, the non-violent peaceful protesters were attacked severely many suffered injuries and were taken to hospitals. “We were hit, the media were hit, women and children were hit,” one witness in Gotagogama attack site (BBC. Com). Riot police had been called in to control the situation as the lawyers and office workers started to come out to protect the protesters.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appealed and urged people to remain calm and stop violence and acts of revenge against citizens, irrespective of political affiliations. All efforts will be made to restore political stability through consensus, within the constitutional mandate and to resolve the economic crisis through Twitter posts. A few hours later the Rajapaksha acolytes demolished the entire peaceful protest zone and the situation transpired. And due to the viral sensation country had posed on curfew. Srilankans, Celebrities, and Foreigners started to show up their defence through social media and peaceful protest against the vulnerable act made by Rajapaksha acolytes.
PM Mahinda Rajapaksha steps down from Power
Mahinda Rajapaksha, the Prime minister of SriLanka relinquished his resignation letter on the 9th of May 2022 to his younger brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksha, saying that ‘he hoped to resolve the crisis’ (BBC News) which took place at Galle Green Face. Even though he left a saying his resignation is to resolve the crisis this resignation was prone by the Srilankan citizens for his vulnerable activity after worsening the country. His exit was humiliating after years in power.
It is clearly exposed that the Rajapaksha acolytes tried to condemn and provoke the peaceful protesters to violence. Peaceful protesters had to attack back the Rajapaksha acolytes to save the victims and the non-violent peaceful protesters because the Police and Forces showed up less. This generation understood the assignment of how to fight back intelligently. For a month they carried out a peaceful protest with many creative ideas. Youngsters knew the importance of knowledge and how to fight back against Kakistocracy. But the acolytes instead established destruction and rancorous violence. The country is deliberately wanting a conflict-free protest rather than a blood bath and a harmonious environment.
